HPT Albuquerque Main Event – Williams Creates A Splash

HPT Albuquerque Main Event – Williams Creates A Splash

It is always nice to hear a success story in poker and yesterday we had one as James Williams turned $190 into a grand prize of $56,652 by winning the $1,650 buy-in Heartland Poker Tour Main Event Albuquerque.

The plumber by trade beat out 141 players in the NLHE event which was being held at the Route 66 casino. He qualified through a satellite event and managed to win his first ever poker victory whilst also doubling his career earnings from poker in one go.

His final hand saw him playing heads up against Anthony Herrera as the chips went in the middle while he was holding the K-Q; his opponent only had the Q-9 which didn’t get lucky on the board. This handed the ecstatic Williams the title and winners cheque.

He has already made plans to head straight to the next HPT stop in Indiana which is to be the last of the season for the Heartland Poker Tour. That final event is expected to be the biggest on the HPT calendar with huge numbers expected.

Notable Players In The Field!

Williams certainly didn’t have it easy as there were plenty of former HPT final tablists, with names such as Craig Casino, Scott Dougherty and Stan Jablonski all taking to the felt. The former was actually the only one of those who made the final table on this occasion; he eventually finished in fourth place. That result was a good improvement on his sixth place finish at the HPT St.Louis.

There were also some other big names taking part such as Allen Kessler, Maria Ho and the enigmatic Bryan Devonshire. Maria Ho actually busted out of the event back on Day 1 whilst Devonshire just fell short of being paid after being eliminated just before the bubble and Kessler actually went on to finish in 11th place.

The three time HPT winner this season Greg Raymer decided to miss out on this event, maybe due to practically already nailing down the Player Of The Tour award with his three wins so far. He was last seen at the WSOP Circuit Event in River Rock over the weekend.

The Final Standings:

James Williams – $56,652

Anthony Herrera – $36,419

Tyler Thompson – $24,280

Stan Jablonski – $16,692

John Bechard – $13,151

Robert Weekes – $11,128

With another event done and dusted, we anxiously await another to fill the void. Luckily we do not have to wait too long as the HPT will be kicking off again on the 9th November at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas.
