High rollers now have another reason to head to the next World Poker Tour (WPT) event after organisers revealed plans to launch a brand new competition designed specifically for players of this kind.

Though details remain scarce, the new competition series, known as the WPT Alpha8, is set to be introduced onto the professional calendar in the next few months.

Under the plans, the new tournaments will be held in venues across Europe, Asia and both North and South America. The first of these WPT Alpha8 tournaments will take place at the upcoming Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open in Florida.

Due to take place this August, the competition isn’t for the faint of heart with a buy-in of at least $100,000. The high-stakes nature of play makes it the ideal tournament to be televised so it’s no surprise to learn that the WPT has also secured a TV deal for the event.

The television rights agreement means the Alpha8 series will be broadcast on the US-based FOX Sports 1 network, with coverage commencing in March 2014.

Adam Pliska, the current WPT president, could barely disguise his excitement for the headline-making tournaments to come.

Alpha8 represents the highest televised treatment of super high-roller tournament poker to date”, he explained. “Playing out over a global stage, this series will give audiences insight into the intensity and skill demanded at the sport’s highest levels”.

The event is the latest in a string of super high roller events hosted by the WPT. Last year, the company made global news headlines with the $100,000 WPT World Championship event in Las Vegas, which saw David Sands take home winnings of $1,023,750 from a field of 21 big-name players.

Fox Sports 1 Vice President of Programming David Sussin shared Mr Pliska’s sense of excitement for the competition ahead and had high hopes for the channel’s coverage.

He said: “With this new series, WPT has significantly raised the stakes of televised poker. By increasing the risk and raising the pressure, WPT Alpha8 delivers more drama and bigger personalities, and we’re confident the show will quickly become a habit for our viewers”.

With as many as eight different stops anticipated as part of the high roller series, Alpha8 could be one name poker fans look out for in the near future.
