Ole Schemion wins GPI 2013 Player of the Year award

Ole Schemion

Ole Schemion has been crowned winner of the Global Poker Index Player of the Year award, outshining poker professionals including Daniel Negreanu. The Canadian player led the race for most of the season but lost it in December, following Schemion’s stellar performance in Prague.

The GPI winners are decided each year based on their performance in the most important tournaments. In 2012, Dan Smith won the race by a thread but he couldn’t hold on to his lead despite a decent season, while Ole cruised to victory after winning the PCA, the EPT Grand Final, the Lebanese Poker Tour and EPT Prague events.

Schemion trailed the leading pack for most of the year, but made an impressive comeback in Barcelona, where the EPT stopped in September. He didn’t win any of the events in the capital city of Catalonia, but finished in the money in the Main Event while securing the 6th place in both High roller events.

Not surprisingly, he is also the most successful German poker player in 2013 according to GPI standings ahead of Marvin Rettenmaier and Philipp Gruissem. They finished inside the World Top 10, so overall 2013 was a good year for German professionals. Martin Finger, Fabian Quoss and Dominik Nitsche also accumulated more than 2,000 points to feature in the GPI National Germany Player of the Year Top 10.

It is not exactly a surprise that Schemion won the GPI 2013 Player of the Year Award as he was crowned Rookie of the Year in 2012 at the GPI EPT awards. The moment that everyone is waiting for is the GPI European Poker Awards, scheduled for January 29th with Casino de Deauville being the gracious host.
