Panka Steamrolls His Way to the Top of GPI

Panka in EPT Deauville

For the last few weeks, the top 10 spots of the Global Poker Index 300 have been somewhat stagnant, which is to be expected given the holidays and the changing to a new year. However, the opposite is true for the GPI Player of the Year race. The POY contest resets on January 1st, meaning that a single big score could send a player rocketing up the list. This past week, that is exactly what happened.

For the GPI300 Top 10, the only change was a simple flip-flop between Philipp Gruissem and Dan Smith in the 4th and 5th place spots. However, all of the players currently in the top 10 are in Australia for the huge tournaments down under and a good finish could see the leaderboard shaken up quite a bit.

On the other hand, the top 10 of the POY went through pretty heavy turmoil. Four of the players are new to the top ten and Polish pro Dominik Panka shot from 10th place to taking the highest honours. For Mustapha Kanit, Marvin Rettenmaier, Marcin Wydrowski, and Isaac Baron, their entry into the top 10 comes courtesy of strong recent finishes.

When the week started, Vanessa Selbst was on top, but Dominik Panka’s rise through the ranks has been nothing but amazing. His first win came at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event, one of the most hotly-contested tournaments on the planet. As if that were not enough, the pro showed he was truly on a heater by following up the win with another at the EPT Deauville High Roller tournament. In total, his 2014 earnings have reached the $1.8 million mark, making him the man to beat.

Just outside the top 10, some other big moves are being made. Spanish player Adrian Mateos Diaz jumped up 109 places to finish in 11th. Also, Jason Mercier, who reigned at the top of the GPI300 for several months, was able to capture the 21st place, a boost of 126 places from his previous week’s finish in 147th.
