PokerStars Making News Across the Board

Jake Cody at the PCA

It’s been a busy week for online poker giant PokerStars. Being featured in several diverse stories, the company has been receiving even more attention than normal in the past days. These are a few of the stories that have hit the airwaves:

PokerStars Wins Major Award at International Gaming Awards:

For the second year in a row, PokerStars has been awarded the award for “Online Poker Operator of the Year”. At the IGA in London, Eric Hollreiser accepted the award on behalf of the Rational Group, the parent company of PokerStars.

While there is no denying that the company is the largest in the game, PokerStars has never been one to rest on its laurels and 2013 was indeed a busy year. The company passed the seemingly unbelievable milestone of 100 billion hands played online, hosted the largest ever poker tournament, and introduced four new poker variants into their offerings.

PokerStars Gives Cancer Research a Boost:

In what may be one of the stranger stories that PokerStars is involved in, the company helped design and bring to launch a new game called Play to Cure: Genes in Space. However, this game is more than just for entertainment – players who download the app and explore the missions will actually be adding to cancer research.

Harnessing the power of extended computing and the human element may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but it appears to be true. Because humans are actually better at identifying gene patterns than computers, turning the process into a game that millions can play will deliver countless hours of research at essentially no cost to the Cancer Research UK organisation.

PokerStars Pro Gets Ready to be a Father:

In more normal news, member of Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody and his girlfriend are getting closer and closer to becoming parents. With a due date of March 23rd hovering in the near distance, the couple are planning to relocate to Miami for the birth and will be inviting their families to attend as well. In answer to the question, it will be a girl and Arianna will be her name.

Currently, Cody is in Europe following the tournament trail with the EPT stop in Deauville and other events. Anticipating the role of being a father, Cody has been taking advice from other poker pros that have recently had children, such as David Williams, and getting ready to explore what a poker player’s life is like with a baby in tow.
