Diving fanatic set to channel love of poker into charity event in Sheffield

They say that the key to success in poker is a willingness to immerse yourself in the game surrounding you, but that shouldn’t be a problem for a group of fundraising players set to compete in the UK’s first underwater poker tournament.

Scheduled to take place in the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield on August 10th, the event has been set up to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support.

The competition is sure to cause a splash among poker fans and is the brainchild of John Stanley who was eager to channel his two passions into an important cause.

Mr Stanley had been personally affected by cancer, losing his father, grandfather and aunt while his wife Gina was also diagnosed with an endometrial form of the disease in January 2012.

Speaking on the group’s official fundraising page, Mr Stanley explained just how the idea came to him during a restless night.

“My two passions are diving, I am a Dive Master with our local club at Diveworld, Sheffield and I love a good game of poker which, with all modesty aside, I’m not bad at,” he explains.

“Then it struck me – it was obvious, we’d have to organise a 6 man underwater poker competition! And thats how it all began – a bizarre thought at 3am.”

In the intervening months his wife Gina underwent chemotherapy treatment amid hopes she would make a recovery. Unfortunately, her cancer returned earlier this year and she passed away last May.

But this has dampened Mr Stanley’s determination to raise money for this important cause, which he plans to do with the support of Napoleon’s Casino and Diveworld who will both be sponsoring the event.

As part of proceedings, Diveworld will be offering a try dive worth £15 to those donating a minimum of £5 at the event. A raffle will also be run offering prizes like a champagne dinner for four, a driveway clean, football tickets for Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday and even a P&O Mini Cruise.

Those looking to show their support for this important event are advised to head poolside between 4:30pm and 8pm at the pool to see the six combatants do battle at the underwater table.

With 100% of all money raised going to this important cause, there’s never been a better reason to watch poker.
